UPDATE: Missing Lompoc teen found safe in Vandenberg Village

Posted: Updated:

7 p.m. UPDATE: The Lompoc Police Department says it has located Krystal Jongsma. Police released the following statement at 6:57 p.m. Wednesday via the department's app:

The Lompoc Police Department has located Krystal Jongsma! We would like to thank the public for their help and concern. She was found in the Village and is healthy.

A family friend says the teen was found on Vanguard Drive, not far from the search area. She was inside a house when she was located. A citizen reportedly saw Jongsma and alerted authorities. She is said to be OK.

Lompoc PD says detectives are currently speaking to Jongsma and more information will be provided as it becomes available.

"The Lompoc Police Department wants to thank the community for its assistance locating Jongsma," the department said in a statement.

Search and rescue crew members have been called in to help with the search for a missing Lompoc teen.

Krystal Jongsma, 16, was reported missing on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Her grandfather dropped her off at Cabrillo High School in Vandenberg Village at 7:30 a.m. Police say she did not attend any of her classes. However, several students reportedly saw her sitting on a bench around noon that day.

Community members searched the Burton Mesa Ecological Reserve near the high school late Tuesday night and returned there on Wednesday.

"We have volunteers out looking in the last area that we had some information about that she might be out there," said Michael Lewis, Krystal's stepfather. "We have about five or six volunteers looking through the brush and the trails that go out to, there's a small lake out here, so there's a couple indications that she was out there and we're looking out there to see if we can find anything... Her phone pinged out there the day before she went missing, so we're looking out there to see if we can find anything, any clues to her whereabouts."

Lewis says Krystal has not responded to phone calls or texts and her phone goes straight to voicemail.

One volunteer used a drone to help in the search on Wednesday. An unusual-looking spot in a small body of water within the reserve piqued their interest.

A Santa Barbara County Sheriff's helicopter was called in to help survey the area and search and rescue crews arrived in the afternoon.

Investigators say teens are known to socialize in the open space next to the high school.

Lewis says Krystal is a good student and comes and goes from school and does her homework like clockwork.

Police say Krystal was last seen wearing dark-colored pants, a dark-colored sweatshirt, and an olive green backpack.

Anyone with information about her whereabouts is urged to call the Lompoc Police Department at (805) 736-2341.
