Sierra Vista offers support group for new dads

Posted: Updated:

Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center and CAPSLO Family and Community Support Services Division partnered together to bring resources together for single dads in the area.

Organizers say there are many classes that focus on generic parenting or motherhood, but one just for dads.

"When I got into the program I realized I was surrounded by a bunch of individuals going through the same thing as me," said father Corey Baker, "so I felt that I was not alone during that process. It gave me good insight on how to manage my situation because hearing stories from people going through similar situations gave me a different perspective."

The first class started Aug. 29 and the class lasts six weeks. Organizers offer the class four times a year.

"This guy can be a handful but at the end of the day this is my son. I enjoy being a father. I take that with pride," added Baker.

"My mom was a single parents. My father passed away. She did that with four kids so I always think of her when things get hard. We weren't the best four children, so if she could do it I could do it," said Baker.

Class size is limited so participants are encouraged to register ahead of time by calling (844) 673-4320.
