With victims and survivors in a city visited by people from all corners of the country, connections to the Las Vegas shooting stem far and wide.

Cal Poly held a vigil on Thursday night, marking the loss while giving an opportunity for those to grieve, whether directly connected to shooting victims and survivors or not.

On campus, the names of the victims were read aloud followed by a moment of silence as those gathered remembered the Sunday night tragedy in which a gunman shot and killed 58 people and injured hundreds.

For Matt Miller, a Cal Poly freshman, the somber ceremony hit particularly hard. Originally assigned to attend the vigil and cover it as part of a journalism project for a class, Miller's mother later called him with sad news: Lisa Patterson, the mother of his hometown friend Robert, was among one of the victims of the shooting. Miller tied a black ribbon in Patterson's honor.

"I pictured my friend's little sister, who's six or seven years old," Miller described to KSBY News. "I see her running around, and I see their mom, a saint of a woman, taking care of them, but I can't imagine how little Brooke or my friend Robert feel right now."

A GoFundMe campaign called the Lisa Patterson Memorial Fund has been set up to help her family.
