First Allegiant Air flight since Las Vegas shooting arrives at Santa Maria airport

Posted: Updated:

An Allegiant Air flight from Las Vegas landed at the Santa Maria airport Wednesday for the first time since the Las Vegas shooting.

Many locals came home on the flight. Most were still shaken up - not only Route 91 Harvest Festival attendees but those who were on the Las Vegas Strip, near the concert venue.

"Crowds of people were coming in and just rushing by as if they were trying to move away and finally somebody said, 'There is a shooter and they are coming this way.'"

Santa Maria resident Laura Huebner says the gunshots were so loud, it was hard to tell where they were coming from or if there were multiple shooters.

"Everybody just ran in all directions and I was so scared that I dove under a table and I was on the ground behind a table," said Huebner. "I've never had anything like this happen to me in my life and I was too afraid to stand up."

Laura says the whole Strip was on lockdown and she came across many people who became separated from their friends and loved ones.

Those who arrived from Las Vegas on Wednesday say everyone experienced the panic that followed the shooting and it's something they will never forget.

"It was traumatizing, especially for those who went but even everywhere around," said Nicholas Burgeson, a San Luis Obispo resident. "The day after, the whole Strip was quiet."

Shortly after the plane arrived, it filled up with more passengers flying to Las Vegas. Some said they have family members there who, thankfully, were not hurt but are shaken up so they want to be there with them for support.

The next flight to Santa Maria from Las Vegas is scheduled to arrive Friday.
