Neighbors uneasy about recent shootings along Lazo Way in Santa Maria

Posted: Updated:

Police are investigating a shooting Wednesday night in Santa Maria. Gunfire struck a car and a house on the north end of town.

It happened near the intersection of Lazo Way and Rancho Verde, a couple of blocks from Grogan Park.

Neighbors say there seems to be more criminal activity in that area lately and it's making them feel uneasy.

Nicholas Comas says, when he first moved in eight years ago, the area was quiet, but lately, gunfire has left him worried about his family’s safety.

“Last night, after I heard about what had happened, I had started re-entertaining the idea of moving out of the area and mostly in the context of the safety of my child," he said.

The shooting happened shortly before 7 p.m.

Police say the house and parked car appear to have been a backdrop to the shooting and not the intended targets.

“People got more scared and afraid with the shootings that are happening," said Fermin Ortega, who lives nearby.

Police are investigating whether this incident is related to a shooting that happened along the same street about a month ago.

In that shooting, 19-year old Edward Ramirez of Santa Maria was killed.

Police say they don't have any updates on that shooting but it is still an ongoing investigation.

“Because of the interest to this particular end of town, officers will be conducting extra patrols in that area," said Lt. Jesse Silva, Santa Maria Police Department.

Neighbors say they hope this won’t happen again but either way, they're taking precautions.

“Seems like things have changed a little, more violence. For the sake of my family and me I am just going to have to stay alert," said Joe Guzman, who lives two doors down from where the shooting occurred on Wednesday.

Investigators say there is no information about a suspect at this time, only that the vehicle involved fled the scene.
