Surf competition to benefit cancer patients this weekend

The annual Surfing for Hope Longboard Contest Weekend begins Friday at Pismo Beach and Avila Beach. 

All proceeds for the Surfing for Hope event will go toward the Surfing for Hope Foundation in San Luis Obispo which raises funds to support and assist cancer patients and their families. 

The event is designed to inspire those diagnosed with cancer and show that surfing can be therapeutic and healing.   

Here are the events happening during the Surfing for Hope weekend: 
Friday, October 6, 4 p.m. - Memorial Paddle Out, Avila Beach
Friday, October 6, 5:30-10 p.m. - Benefit Reception Dinner, Avila Beach
Saturday, October 7, starting at 7 a.m. - Longboard Surf Contest, Pismo Beach Pier
Saturday, October 7, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. - Cancer Resource Health Fair, Pismo Beach Pier

Ryan Teixeira and Mike Spangler, have been named the 2017 Paddle Out honorees. Teixeira, an Arroyo Grande High School student who succumbed to a rare form of leukemia. Spangler was a local business owner who loved surfing and golfing.
