A bicyclist, who officers say was riding near the middle of the road, was hit by a car and killed on Corbett Canyon Road in San Luis Obispo Friday morning, the California Highway Patrol confirms to KSBY News.

Paramedics were dispatched to the area near Highway 227 shortly before 7:30 a.m., but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Upon arrival, the officers noticed that the female bicyclist was in the middle of the road and CPR was being administered by a passerby doctor that came upon the scene," said Jordan Richards, public information officer for the San Luis Obispo area of the California Highway Patrol.

Officers say the cyclist did not have any identification on her. They are estimating her to be between 20- and 40-years-old and say they will use fingerprint analysis to hopefully determine who she is.

"It doesn't appear that she's a professional rider. She doesn't have the appropriate shoes and she wasn't wearing a helmet," Richards said.

The driver of the car, reportedly a 47-year-old man from Arroyo Grande, told officers he was on his way to work, heading eastbound on Corbett Canyon Road, and did not see the woman until it was too late because of the glare from the sun, according to CHP. Officers say the driver was going about 50 mph before he hit the back of the woman’s bike.

The stretch of road where the collision occurred is narrow and does not have bike lanes.

The driver was not arrested and drugs or alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.

CHP says he did consent to having his cell phone taken to be examined, which officers say is normal protocol in crashes like these.

The bicycle and vehicle were both taken as evidence as the investigation is ongoing. It is unknown if any charges will be filed against the driver.

Corbett Canyon Road at Highway 227 re-opened at about 10:30 a.m.
