Junior high raises more than $11,000 for hurricane relief efforts

Posted: Updated:

The students and staff at Arellanes Junior High School in Santa Maria will present a check for more than $11,000 to the Red Cross Monday afternoon for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.

Students in the Builder's Club, which is a student organization sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, helped organize the fundraiser for victims of those major hurricanes.

The school alone raised more than $5,500 for relief efforts. That amount was matched by a local business that wishes to remain anonymous.

The total amount being donated is more than the school raised for Hurricane Katrina relief in 2005, which was the overall goal of the fundraiser.
