Road construction at Octagon Barn to impact South Higuera through January

Posted: Updated:

Construction on the Octagon Barn in San Luis Obispo is in full swing, and drivers can expect more road closures on the way.

"Right now, we are widening South Higuera," said Patrick Riddell, Engineer for San Luis Obispo County.

Crews are working to install a left turn lane into the Octagon Barn, racing to finish the dirt roads before Mother Nature arrives.

"They're pushing to get all of their grading done before we get the first rain," Riddell said.

A full closure of South Higuera is planned for mid-November for two weeks. Only bikers and pedestrians will be allowed through.

"Obviously, avoid driving South Higuera if you can. The 101 is adjacent," Riddell said.

After several years of planning, the Octagon Barn is expected to have a grand opening by Spring 2018. Once finished, it'll be open to the community for weddings, festivals, and barn dances.

"There's a lot of people looking forward to seeing this project be complete," Riddell said.

Some bikers are also anxiously waiting to see when the 7-mile City-to-Sea Bob Jones Trail extension will break ground.

"It's been a long time coming. I've been in the area since 2001. They've been talking about it ever since then," said Tracey Aumiller, San Luis Obispo bicyclist.

The county says come the new year, they'll be looking into plans and funding, and the project may break ground as soon as 2019-2020.

"I'm surprised to hear that it's actually going to get finished. It has been so long in the making," Aumiller said.

The Octagon Barn is expected to cost $5.5 million. Right now, the project is short $200,000. There is a matching donation drive right now going on through the end of November, to help with their goals click here
