Owners of guns with bullet button feature face deadline to register weapons

Posted: Updated:

Gun store owners want to get the word out about a new law that affects some California gun owners.

The law, which went into effect on January 1, 2017, requires owners of firearms with a bullet button feature to register their guns as assault weapons.

"If you don't register it, you'd be in illegal possession of an assault rifle," said Brian Anton, Tacti-Cool Guns & Gear CEO. "They could potentially be totally unaware of this legislation that's passed which could criminalize them next year if they don't take action."

Just this week, the California DOJ Bureau of Firearms sent a letter and poster to Anton's Santa Maria store, advising of the upcoming deadline to register.

Back in the 1990s, bullet buttons were required on semi-automatic rifles sold in California.

"The bullet button requires the use of a tool, and a bullet counts as a tool. You can use it to insert into this button and release the magazine," Anton explained.

If you don't register your bullet bullet weapon, you can opt to alter the gun so it no longer fits the definition of an assault weapon.

"So people will be forced to spend a little bit of money to convert their legally-owned gun so they don't become a criminal," Anton said.

Some customers in Anton's store on Wednesday said they planned on spending the extra cash.

"Granted, it doesn't cost much to register them, but a lot of people don't want to be on that list," said Joe Degeus, Tacti-Cool Guns & Gear Manager.

It costs $15 to register your gun.

That's per person, not per gun.

The deadline to register with the CA Department of Justice is June 30, 2018. Click here to register.

It affects assault weapons lawfully possessed between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2016.
