Posted: Updated:

Governor Jerry Brown on Thursday signed legislation that expands job-protected maternity and paternity leave to more Californians.

Senate Bill 63 will provide 12 weeks of job-protected leave to parents with newborns who work for companies with 20 to 49 employees. Currently, only those who work for employers with 50 or more employees receive 12 weeks of leave.

The new law will take effect on January 1, 2018.

SB 63, the New Parent Leave Act, was authored by Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson who represents Santa Barbara County.
