Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara play out scoreless draw in front of 10,293

Posted: Updated:

Junior goalkeeper Simon Boehme produced three saves Saturday evening as the Cal Poly men’s soccer program furthered its unbeaten run at UC Santa Barbara’s Harder Stadium to a fourth straight year with a scoreless draw in front of 10,293 fans – the 21st largest crowd figure in NCAA regular season history.

Junior forward Sean Goode produced a match leading three shots on goal for Cal Poly (5-8-1, 1-4-1). Saturday’s match was the 18th time in the last 20 meetings between Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara that the contest had finished drawn or decided by a single goal.

Saturday’s attendance figure marked the largest NCAA men’s soccer crowd of 2017. Since the beginning of the 2007 season, 19 of the top 53 regular season crowd figures in NCAA history have occurred in matches between Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara.

With Saturday’s draw, Cal Poly improved to four points in the Big West Conference North Division standings and closed its gap on third-place Sacramento State (7-6-1, 3-2-1) to six points with four regular season games remaining. UC Santa Barbara (5-5-4, 3-1-2), meanwhile, moved into second place on 11 points. UC Davis (7-6-2, 4-1-1) took over the division lead earlier Saturday on 13 points after defeating Sacramento State, 2-0.

Cal Poly returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at UC Davis. Kickoff is 4 p.m.

Cal Poly enjoyed Saturday’s first legitimate scoring opportunity, but senior forward Tyler Savitsky fired over the cross bar in the fourth minute.

The Mustangs, meanwhile, kept UC Santa Barbara to just one shot attempt during the opening 29 minutes before Boehme chalked up a pair of saves in the 30th to keep the scoreline level.

Into the second half and Cal Poly once more had the best early scoring opportunity with Goode turned away by Gaucho goalkeeper Alan Carillo in the 61st. Junior forward Jose Rivera fired wide of the left Gaucho post on 77 minutes before Goode produced the most fruitful scoring opportunity of regulation, forcing Carillo to parry away his attempt at the top left corner.

In the 12th match between the two sides to reach overtime in the last 25 meetings, Cal Poly cobbled together the best chance to break the scoreless deadlock in the 100th minute, but, with a loose ball pinging around the Gaucho penalty area, the Mustangs saw both Goode and Savitsky turned away by Carillo in a three-second interval.

Boehme preserved the draw and his fourth career clean sheet with his final save three seconds from time.
