Taylor Nelson climbs record books as Mustangs sweep CSUN

Senior setter Taylor Nelson moved up to third all-time in career assists at Cal Poly as the Mustangs swept CSUN (25-11, 25-22, 25-13) for its 13th straight win Friday in front of a packed crowd at Mott Athletics Center to remain undefeated in Big West play.

Nelson finished with a match-high 36 assists and added seven kills. Sophomore outside hitter Torrey Van Winden led the Mustangs in kills with 14, hitting .591 on 22 attacks and added nine digs. Senior outside hitter Raeann Greisen posted 11 kills, hitting .562 on 16 attacks. Junior libero Katherine Brouker led Cal Poly in digs with 14.

The Mustangs (18-2, 8-0) got out to a fast start to begin the first set. They took an early 11-5 lead and would not let the Matadors (10-10, 4-4) back in it. They ended the set on an 8-1 run to win the set 25-11. As a team, Cal Poly .448 in the first set compared to CSUN’s .038.

The second set, however, would prove to be much closer. The two teams would trade both points and runs until, tied at 11, the Matadors went on a 4-0 run. Down 19-14, the Mustangs would answer with six straight points to take its first lead of the set 20-19 and would go on to win the set 25-22.

Cal Poly came out strong to begin the third set, scoring four of the games first five points. It would be as close as 6-4 before the Mustangs would put their foot on the gas. Up 17-12, Cal Poly finished the set on an 8-1 run to win 25-13. The Mustangs hit .520 in the third and held CSUN to a -.032 hitting percentage.

Cal Poly will look to win its 14th straight match Saturday as they host Long Beach State at 4:30 p.m. The Mustangs beat the 49ers in four sets when the two teams played last month in Long Beach.
