Cal Poly volleyball sweep Long Beach State for 14th straight win

Sophomore Torrey Van Winden posted 15 kills, hitting .387 to lead Cal Poly to its 14th straight win as the Mustangs (19-2, 8-0) swept Long Beach State Saturday at Mott Athletics Center (25-14, 25-18, 25-17).

Cal Poly out-hit the 49ers (6-17, 3-7) in each of the three sets. As a team, the Mustangs hit .430 for the match.

Junior Adlee Van Winden added seven kills, two blocks and two service aces. Senior setter Taylor Nelson finished with 30 assists, seven digs and four kills. Sophomore Nadia Retoff chipped in with six kills and three blocks. Junior libero Katherine Brouker lead Cal Poly in digs with 11.

The early part of the first set saw the two teams trade points until up 12-9, the Mustangs went on a 5-1 run. They would not relinquish the lead from that point, finishing the set on a 7-2 run to win 25-14. The Mustangs held the 49ers to a .092 hitting percentage in the first set.

The second set proved to be much closer as at one point it was 14-13. From there, Cal Poly would go on a 6-1 run. They would go on to win the set 25-18.

The Mustangs and the 49ers would play each other close again early on in the third set. Up 13-12, Cal Poly went on a 9-1 run to take a 22-13 lead. They would go on to win the final set 25-17. The Mustangs had its highest hitting percentage in the third, hitting .500.

As a team, the Mustangs only committed 6 errors for the match, 2 in each set. That is the fewest amount of errors they have had in a match all season.

Next up for Cal Poly is a road match against UC Irvine on Tuesday at 7 p.m. That is followed by a home match against second place Hawai’i Friday at 7 p.m. from Mott Athletics Center.
