Adam Olsen scores team-leading fifth, but Cal Poly falls late to UC Davis

Posted: Updated:

Senior defender Adam Olsen scored his team-leading fifth goal of 2017 Wednesday evening for the Cal Poly men’s soccer program, but a Mustang own goal with six minutes remaining in regulation allowed Big West Conference North Division leader UC Davis to turn a one-goal deficit into a 2-1 victory inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

Freshman goalkeeper Jason Hernandez recorded three saves for Cal Poly (6-10-1, 2-6-1), which grabbed a 1-0 lead on Wednesday evening in 17th minute. It was midfielder Alex Sanchez who earned his third assist of the season by lining a corner kick into the Aggie penalty area that Olsen headed past UC Davis goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley.

Hernandez chalked up saves in the fifth and 37th minutes to preserve Cal Poly’s one-goal lead. The Aggies, however, equalized two minutes before the break. A corner kick from Aggie midfielder Luke Hazel fell to defender Chase Rhode at the left post. Rhode’s attempt was batted away by Hernandez, but the errant ball popped up for defender Roy Boateng, who headed his first goal of 2017 at the right post.

Cal Poly, eliminated from Big West Conference Tournament contention last weekend, enjoyed a handful of chances to regain the lead with senior forward Tyler Savitsky forcing a 62nd-minute save from Lapsley before freshman defender Andrew Forth headed wide of the left post in the 74th.

UC Davis (9-7-2, 6-2-1), however, clinched the Big West North Division title and an opening-round bye for the Nov. 1, 4 and 10 conference tournament in 84th. Aggie midfielder Justin Wright drove a cross from the right side into the penalty area for defender Nabi Kibunguchy, who headed toward goal. Attempting to clear the shot, Cal Poly senior defender Tony Scimeca inadvertently headed the ball past Hernandez.

Cal Poly closes the 2017 season when hosting Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Oct. 28. Kickoff at Spanos Stadium is 7 p.m.
