Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara close season with 1-1 Blue-Green Rivalry draw

Posted: Updated:

Mustang senior Emily Hansen scored for the second game in a row, bringing the Cal Poly women’s soccer team level with UC Santa Barbara at Harder Stadium on Sunday, on the way to a 1-1 draw in a Blue-Green Rivalry season finale.

The Gauchos took the lead in the 20th minute when Kate Shoemaker headed in a corner kick from Colby Parker.

Cal Poly redshirt freshman Georgina Stiegeler hit the post in the 10th minute, and sophomore forward Jessica Johnson shot wide in the 24th.

Also before the break, senior Megan Abutin placed a 36th-minute shot on goal, and Stiegeler followed up with another off the rebound, but Brittney Rogers was there for back-to-back saves to keep UCSB in front.

Cal Poly would equalize in the 48th minute. Junior Chelsea Barry tested Rogers with a free kick, and although Rogers came up with the stop, Hansen capitalized on the rebound to tie the match.

Mustang sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Brown made six saves in regulation, including a pair vs. the conference’s leading goal-scorer, Amanda Ball (preventing her from tallying her 11th of the year), on 64’ and 78’.

Brown then also made three straight stops during a Gaucho sequence in the 95th and 96th minutes, ultimately finishing with nine, her second-highest total of the year.

Cal Poly finished the season 7-9-3 overall, with 8 points at 2-4-2 in Big West play. UCSB finished 6-8-5 and also 2-4-2.

Sunday’s tie was the second in a row in the series, which the Mustangs lead 15-8-6 all-time.

Barry’s assist was her fourth of the season, while the goal was the fifth of Hansen’s career. Hansen also finished with 72 career starts, ranking No. 5 in school history.
