Race to the Rock: Morro Bay Tri brings visitors to the coast

Posted: Updated:

The Morro Bay Triathlon zoomed up the coast Sunday morning.

Athletes competed with a choice of two different distances, 'Olympic' and 'sprint.'

The Olympic race included a 1.5k swim, 40k bike and 10k run.

The sprint race includes a 750-meter swim, 20.5k bike and 5.4k run.

A third choice lets participants kayak or paddle-board to the finish line instead of swimming.

Many say the triathlon brings them back every year, simply because of the view that comes with it.

"The course is just absolutely beautiful. You have the rock, the nice bay, and going up the coast, you're running on the beach, it's pretty incredible," said Stephen Nuemann, who won 2nd place overall in the Olympic triathlon.

Attendees say the view also helped motivate them to get across the finish line.
