NEW YORK (AP) - Only four women have ever been nominated for best director at the Oscars, but this year's awards might be a different story.
While Hollywood has been overrun with the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the harsh light it has thrown on widespread gender imbalances throughout the industry, movie screens have been aglow with ambitious films by female directors who are beating the odds stacked against them.
Greta Gerwig, Patty Jenkins and Dee Rees are among the early contenders for a category that has been overwhelming male throughout the Oscars' 89 year history.
Gerwig has watched five men be nominated for best director year after year says, using some choice language, that it really upsets her.
