Nipomo skate park project rolling ahead after county secures funding

Posted: Updated:

Skateboard enthusiasts may soon have new ramps to ride in San Luis Obispo County with plans to construct a skate park in Nipomo off Tefft Street.

"The Board of Supervisors recently allocated $150,000 to do the design and the environmental components and the construction documents," said Nick Franco, Director for San Luis Obispo County Parks.

The proposed park has been in limbo since 2012 but the recent funding gives the project a green light to begin.

"So that's really the first big step in doing something to implement the master plan," Franco said.

Right now, skateboarders in Nipomo have nowhere legally to skate, so if they want to skate they have to do it illegally or go elsewhere.

"If there's a park there, it def gives you the opportunity to try it out," said local skateboarder Jojo Werolin. He thinks a skate park will be good for the youth.

"It's a good workout, it gets you tired. If you want your kids to get out, and something, skating is perfect," Werolin said.

The county thinks the location by the park and next to the library is the ideal spot, but they urge residents to speak up if they think otherwise.

"We want to hear, what are your concerns? How can we mitigate those? How can we plan so we can meet anybody's needs," Franco said.

The county will now hold a public meeting to get input on how the park will look.

"We have the site set aside for a skate park, we have skaters who want to skate, but with skating, there's a bunch of features you can have and that's what we want to hear," Franco said.

The county hopes to have the plans ready by the summer so they can start seeking funding to construct the park.

The public input meeting for the Nipomo skate park will be held Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Nipomo Library.
