Santa Maria hosts Carpinteria in first round of CIF playoffs

Posted: Updated:

The Santa Maria High School football team will host Carpinteria in the first round of the CIF Division 12 playoffs Friday night.

The Saints qualified for the postseason for the first time since 2001 after claiming the Northern League title in their regular season finale. Santa Maria beat fellow league unbeaten Nipomo, 41-25. It's Santa Maria's first league title since 1988.

The Saints are excited to host their first-round game with Carpinteria. Earning a home playoff game has been a goal of Santa Maria's since the start of the season.

"Yeah, finding out we got a home game was great," Santa Maria head coach Dan Ellington said. "That was the idea, you know. It's good. I just hope that people come out and watch the game and it gives us that home-field advantage. Hopefully, we can give them a show."

"We knew coming into the season that this was going to be our year, and we've had a change in mojo around here," Santa Maria senior quarterback Blake Truhitte added. "We won our league championship. That was our goal, and now, we want to continue a deep run in CIF."

Kick off between Santa Maria and Carpinteria is set for 7:30 p.m. at Santa Maria High School.
