Artwork brings women’s equality to light in Atascadero

Posted: Updated:

As Atascadero continues to grow, so does the art.

Another mural was finished this week in downtown Atascadero. The newest piece was created by an artist who came to the Central Coast all the way from Bulgaria.

He says he supports the idea behind the art and supporting women's rights, so he portrayed the theme the best he could.

"Floating is like flying, and for me, it represents freedom. Freedom to choose your life, to live your life how you want to live it," said Ioan Tzenkov, the Bulgarian artist.

Tzenkov was the first place winner after submissions came in from all over the world to take part in the art project.

More art pieces are planned as city officials continue to revamp the look of downtown and uphold the town's history.

Project leaders, Z Villages LLC, say the driving point for the project is based upon the founder of Atascadero, E.G. Lewis.

Lewis is responsible for the City Hall building and the Printery building that still stand today, and is a supporter of women's equality and women's right to vote.

Project founders say Atascadero was founded in the name of women and was, at one point, the only place in the country where a woman could buy and hold land without the permission of a man.

Z Villages LLC say the art is on a large mixed-use building development in the middle of downtown Atascadero that will be the spot of a groundbreaking in spring or summer of 2018.
