UPDATE: CHP searching for driver after hit-and-run leaves teen dead

Posted: Updated:

The California Highway Patrol is searching for a driver after a deadly hit-and-run near Santa Maria on Sunday.

Around 6:30 p.m., authorities say the driver of a vehicle described possibly as a Ford Explorer was traveling southbound on State Route 135, approaching Winter/Goodwin Road, when witnesses say an 18-year-old woman walked into the crosswalk against the red pedestrian signal and into on-coming traffic.

When the woman was in the center of the crosswalk, the vehicle hit her, throwing her about 150 feet and killing her, according to authorities.

Her name has not been released, but officers tell KSBY News she is from Pomona.

It is unknown what speed the driver was going. In the early phases of the investigation, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office issued an "Aware and Prepare" alert, saying the 'light-colored" vehicle would have significant front end damage with broken headlights.

Monday afternoon, investigators were interviewing witnesses but CHP said no arrests had been made.

Officers are asking anyone with information regarding the collision or the vehicle involved to contact them at (805) 593-3333.
