UPDATE: Pedestrian hit, killed on Highway 101 near SLO

Posted: Updated:

A pedestrian from Grover Beach was killed when he was hit by a car along Highway 101 near San Luis Obispo early Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officials say a 41-year-old driver from Castroville called 911 shortly before 4:30 a.m. to report he had hit a pedestrian in the northbound lanes south of S. Higuera Street.

Firefighters tried to revive the 56-year-old, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP. His name has not been released and officers say it is unknown if he was under the influence at the time he was hit.

Witnesses told CHP the man had been walking in between the northbound lanes and they had to swerve to avoid him. Officers say the man may have been trying to get from the center median to the shoulder of the road.

Northbound Highway 101 was shut down until almost 6:00 a.m., causing traffic to backup in the area and drivers to find alternate routes into San Luis Obispo.

Officers say the driver was not arrested and they do not believe he was under the influence.

Anyone who saw anything in the area they believe may help officers with this investigation is asked to call (805) 594-8700 and leave a message for Officer Proper.
