18-year-old woman killed in Orcutt hit-and-run

Posted: Updated:

The Santa Maria office of the California Highway Patrol is searching for a hit-and-run driver after a pedestrian was struck and killed Sunday night on Highway 135 at Goodwin Road in Orcutt.

The name of the victim has not yet been released but officers say she's an 18-year-old woman from Pomona.

"The vehicle that was traveling southbound had a green light to proceed through the intersection," said Sgt. Sergio Perez, California Highway Patrol. "For unknown reasons, a pedestrian walked directly in front of the path of that vehicle."

The impact reportedly threw the woman's body nearly 150 feet away from the crosswalk.

"Original reports were that it was a Ford Explorer, but now we've been getting tips for other vehicles, so we are trying to locate the vehicle and cross off those tips," Sgt. Perez said.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office issued a call using the 9-1-1 system along with a text message to alert Orcutt residents about the suspect's vehicle.

"It was definitely concerning that someone got hit close to home," said James Castillo, Orcutt resident.

Castillo received the alert on his phone.

"It's very disturbing. You have to think, what kind of person would be just driving along and not stop?" he said.

Officers say they are relying on witnesses that may have seen the crash and are searching to see if anyone has any surveillance video that would provide a better description of the vehicle.

If you have any information about the driver or see a vehicle with front-end damage consistent with this type of crash, you're urged to call CHP dispatch at (805) 593-3333.
