Cal Poly finishes 1-10 campaign with 42-0 loss at Northern Colorado

Posted: Updated:

One year removed from an NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoff berth, Cal Poly wrapped up a 1-10 season with a 42-0 loss at Northern Colorado on a chilly but sunny Saturday afternoon at Nottingham Field.

The loss marks the first time since 1998 that the Mustangs were shut out, a streak of 216 games. Nevada blanked Cal Poly 63-0 19 years ago.

Northern Colorado defeated Cal Poly for only the third time in 13 meetings, snapping a six-game losing streak for the season and the series to finish 3-7 on the year.

Lone Cal Poly highlight of the game was provided by senior fullback Jared Mohamed as he finished with exactly 100 yards rushing, the seventh time this season and eighth of his career that he reached the 100-yard mark.

With temperatures in the mid-40s and a 15-miles-per-hour wind out of the east, Cal Poly mustered little offense, held to 88 total yards in the first half and no points in the opening 30 minutes of play for the third time this season.

Northern Colorado, meanwhile, put together four scoring drives prior to the break, resulting in two touchdowns, a pair of field goals and a 21-0 advantage at intermission.

Conor Regan hit Frank Stephens with an 11-yard scoring pass and Ellis Onic II with a 30-yarder while Collin Root added field goals spanning 31 and 33 yards for the Bears. For good measure, Stephens connected with Regan on a two-point conversion pass.

In the third quarter, the Bears marched 73 yards on three plays for another touchdown, a 28-yarder from Regan to Stephens, for a 28-0 lead.

Moments later, Jacob Bobenmoyer blocked a Casey Sublette punt. Sherand Boyd caught the ball on the fly and returned it 20 yards for another Northern Colorado touchdown. It was the first block of a Cal Poly punt since 2013.

In the final minute of the third quarter, Alex Wesley caught a 48-yard bomb from Regan for a 42-0 Bears lead.

Cal Poly was shut out in the first three quarters for the second straight week and third time this season.

The Mustangs finished with 270 total yards, 162 on the ground and 108 through the air. Jake Jeffrey completed 10 of 19 passes for 108 yards and was intercepted once. J.J. Koski caught four passes for 38 yards.

Northern Colorado amassed 478 total yards, 176 on the ground and 302 through the air.

Brand Cartagena rushed for 153 yards on 25 carries while Regan completed 18 of 27 passes for 302 yards and four scores. Onic and Cartagena each caught four passes for the Bears.

B.J. Nard recorded eight tackles for Cal Poly. Luke Nelson led all Northern Colorado defenders with 14 tackles and Keifer  Glau added 10.
