Santa Maria Saints march on to face South El Monte in CIF semifinals

Posted: Updated:

The Santa Maria High School football team will be in action during the holiday weekend as they travel to South El Monte for the CIF Division 12 semifinals on Friday night.

The Saints have feasted on home cooking so far this postseason, averaging 49 points per game through their first two games of the playoffs. Santa Maria has relied on senior quarterback Blake Truhitte to carry the load offensively.

Truhitte, in two playoff games versus Carpinteria and Schurr, has scored 13 total touchdowns, including six through the air, six on the ground, and one on a kick off return.

The Saints are getting close to their goal of a CIF title, but they know they have to get past 11-1 South El Monte first.

"We all felt like, if we don't win the CIF title we would've enjoyed the season if we had a decent year, but it wasn't what we wanted," head coach Dan Ellington said. "It wasn't our goal. Now that it's here, we do see the light at the end of the tunnel. It's exciting, but we have to get over this big team right now."

"It's big for our community, big for our school," senior quarterback Blake Truhitte added. "We knew coming into the season that we wanted to win a league title. That was one goal. Our second goal was to win a CIF championship, so we're just getting closer to that goal."

Santa Maria will kick off in South El Monte Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
