Pismo Beach police officers serve hundreds at community Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:

Pismo Beach police served their community in a different way than usual Wednesday.

The Pismo Beach Police Officers Association put on its 34th annual "Thanksgiving Dinner for the Less Fortunate" at the Pismo Beach Vets Hall.

"So today, for those folks that don't have anywhere to go for Thanksgiving, or, unfortunately, are not in a position to get a Thanksgiving dinner, we want to see you here. We want to serve you in that way today," said Chief Jake Miller, who said this was his 22nd year participating in the event.

Miller says what started out as feeding about 80 people has now grown to about 3,000 meals. Wednesday's event featured music and placemats decorated by children.

Dozens of volunteers help out at the event, from local restaurants to the California Department of Corrections, Miller said.
