Cal Poly women's basketball closes ShareSLO Beach Classic with 88-83 win

Posted: Updated:

After getting out to a 41-39 lead over San Francisco at halftime on Sunday, the Cal Poly women’s basketball team outscored the Dons 31-16 in a pivotal third quarter to take control of the finale to the 11th annual #ShareSLO Holiday Beach Classic, wrapping up the tournament with an 88-83 win at Mott Athletics Center.

Mustang senior Dynn Leaupepe scored a season-high 27 points, shooting 11-of-18 from the floor. The Big West Conference’s sixth-leading all-time free-throw shooter (as well as the school record-holder for single-season free-throw percentage) went 4-for-4 from the foul line, and also added a nine-rebound effort.

Meanwhile her twin sister, Lynn Leaupepe, added 20 points — including a perfect 10-for-10 afternoon at the line — along with six boards.

True freshman point guard Ayzhiana Basallo made her first collegiate start, scoring 16 points while distributing four assists.

San Francisco was coming off a 57-45 neutral-site win over Robert Morris on Saturday that had put the Dons in the driver’s seat for the round-robin tournament title, but the Mustangs earned the split. Both Dynn and Lynn Leaupepe were named to the all-tournament team, along with USF’s Michaela Rakova and Anna Seilund, and RMU’s Jocelynne Jones and Nneka Ezeigbo.

The Dons (2-3) ended the opening quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers for a 22-16 lead following the first, and took their largest lead of the day at 31-24 with 7:07 remaining to the half. Cal Poly (2-3) went on a 17-6 run over the next 4:57, however, on the way to its two-point advantage at the break.

Bec Black sank a jumper to pull USF within 60-52 with 4:32 left in the third, but Cal Poly responded by scoring the next 12 points to surge ahead 72-52 with 11 seconds to go in the quarter.

The Mustangs’ largest lead of the game was 21 — at 76-55 — with 8:24 remaining.

Cal Poly will finish its homestand by hosting Cal State Monterey Bay at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28.
