Posted: Updated:

After winning the Big West Conference regular season title to clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament, the Cal Poly volleyball team was selected as the No. 2 seed in the UCLA sub-regional and will play Denver in the first round in Westwood.

The No. 21 Mustangs will play the Pioneers Friday at 5:30 p.m inside Pauley Pavilion. The winner will go on to face UCLA or Austin Peavy on Saturday at 7 p.m.

UCLA was selected as the No. 15 national seed. The top 16 seeds are selected as host schools.

Denver finished the regular season with an overall record of 23-5. They won both the Summit League regular and tournament titles. They currently have an RPI of 55. Cal Poly’s current RPI is 19. This will be the third meeting all-time with the Pioneers. The Mustangs won both prior meetings by a score of 3-1. The last meeting was on Sept. 11, 2009.

Cal Poly finished the regular season with a 26-2 record and 16-0 in the Big West for the best regular season record in program history. They are also riding a 21-match winning streak into the tournament, the longest in program history and currently the second longest in Division I.

This will be the 15th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and the first since 2007.  The last appearance in 2007 saw the Mustangs win their first two matches before falling to Stanford in the third round. Cal Poly volleyball has never advanced past the third round in the NCAA Tournament.
