Santa Maria High School prepares for CIF Championship on a busy night

Posted: Updated:

This Saturday, Dec. 2 will be a big day of celebration in Santa Maria. The annual Christmas Parade of Lights and the Santa Maria High School CIF championship football game are both taking place that evening.

The parade starts at 5:20 p.m. at the corner of Broadway and Stowell Road and continues north up Broadway to the Santa Maria Town Center Mall.

Starting at 3 p.m., Stowell Road from Broadway to Depot Street will be closed for parade participants to gather. Thornburg Street will also be closed to through traffic between Stowell and Morrison.

Broadway will be closed between Enos Drive and Main Street starting at 4 p.m.

"We will have a dozen motor officers out there on the roads. We'll also have some digital directional signage to help drivers around town," said Mark van de Kamp, City of Santa Maria spokesperson.

Because the parade passes right in front of the high school and will be affecting neighboring streets, the start of the football game has been moved back to 7:45 p.m.

People attending the game are encouraged to arrive no earlier than 6:30 p.m. Parking will be available at the high school and across the street at the Santa Maria Fairpark parking lot for $7 per vehicle. To reach the school, drivers are advised to take Morrison Avenue to Thornburg Street where officers will direct vehicles to the parking areas.

There will be no vehicle access to the high school via Stowell Road.

Tickets to the game are $12 for adults and $5 for students w/ID and children ages 5-13. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the high school from 8 a.m - 3 p.m. There is a max capacity of 3,000 seats and up to 4,500 including standing.

The city's tree lighting ceremony is also scheduled for this Saturday. That takes place just before the start of the parade in front of City Hall at the corner of Broadway and Cook Street.
