Holiday parades to light up Central Coast streets (and Morro Bay) this weekend

Many Central Coast communities are kicking off the holiday season this weekend with parades. Here's a roundup of the events taking place in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties:

FRIDAY, DEC. 1

Lompoc, 6 p.m. The Annual Children's Christmas Season Parade begins on H Street and Pine and heads south, turning west on Ocean Avenue and ending on I Street. This year's theme is "Winter Wonderland." Refreshments and the lighting of the community Christmas tree will follow at Centennial Square.

Santa Barbara, 6:30 p.m. Actor Noah Wyle will be the Grand Marshal of the 65th Annual Downtown Santa Barbara Holiday Parade. It makes its way along State Street from Sola to Cota. This year's theme is "Colors of the Season."

San Luis Obispo, 7 p.m. The 42nd Annual Holiday Parade begins on Chorro at Palm Street and snakes around nine blocks downtown, ending on Higuera at Nipomo. Click here to see the full route. This year's theme is "Holiday Hoedown." The hundreds of parade participants will be competing for Best in Theme, Most Creative, and Most Entertaining.


SATURDAY, DEC. 2

Grover Beach, 10 a.m. The 51st Annual South County Holiday Parade begins at 16th Street and travels down West Grand Avenue to 9th Street, finishing at the Ramona Garden Park Center where Santa's Workshop Fine Art and Craft Faire will follow. This year's theme is "All Aboard the Holiday Express."

Solvang, 11 a.m. More than 50 entries will take part in the Julefest Parade which starts at the Solvang Veterans Hall, travels west on Mission Drive, turns left on Fourth Place, left on Copenhagen Drive, and ends on Alisal Road near the Post Office. You can visit with Santa Claus after the parade in Solvang Park.

Santa Maria, 5:20 p.m. The Christmas Parade of Lights begins at the corner of Broadway and Stowell Road and continues north up Broadway to the Santa Maria Town Center Mall. Click here to see the full route and road closures. 

Morro Bay, 6 p.m. More than 40 decorated boats will parade around the bay during the Lighted Boat Parade, including the Tall Ship Lady Washington. Also near the main stage at Front Street and Embarcadero, you'll find Santa Claus, hot cocoa and a live band performing during the parade.

Paso Robles, 7 p.m. The 56th Annual Christmas Light Parade begins on Spring Street at 10th, travels north to 14th Street, east to Park Street, then around the Downtown City Park on Pine Street to 11th Street. This year's theme is "There's No Place Like Home for Christmas."
