Community hosts surprise BBQ fundraiser for Outdoorsman owners

Posted: Updated:

The community continues to show support for the owners of The Outdoorsman in Arroyo Grande.

Earlier this month, the owners were arrested on two counts each of possessing assault weapons.

Last week, San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow announced his office would not file charges due to a lack of evidence.

Stefanie Todd, one of the shop's owners, says they will have extensive legal fees to cover.

Local organizations such as Red Dirt Coffee and Big Country BBQ wanted to help with those fees by donating drinks and tri-tip meat to sell at a barbeque on Sunday.

Todd says they were sold out within an hour.

"I was in the shop behind the counter, and they said 'you gotta go outside, you gotta go outside,' so I went outside and I saw a line of what had to be 100 people down the entire parking lot... 2931 You know, we know everybody, so it's really great; a lot of familiar faces, a lot of community support, it was overwhelming; I was crying -- joy!" said Todd.

Todd says any extra proceeds will go toward the GoFundMe account for firefighter Gary Helming and his family.
