Police: Santa Maria boy dies from gunshot wound

UPDATE (1:30 a.m.) - The teen who was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound died from his wounds.

His identity has not been released.

UPDATE (9:15 p.m.) -  The victim is a teenage boy with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was alive when he was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center.

Officers are trying to locate witnesses. Police are unsure whether the shooting is gang-related. A gang unit with the department is on scene.

No arrests have been made.

ORIGINAL STORY - Police in Santa Maria are investigating a shooting that severely injured the victim.

The investigation is happening near 300 W. Newlove Dr. on the city's south side.

A police official tells KSBY News officers were called out at 8:13 p.m., the victim has "major injuries," and this could become a homicide investigation.
