San Luis Obispo hotels offering discounted rates to wildfire evacuees

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of people have been displaced from their homes as a result of the several fires burning in Southern California.

On the Central Coast, around 15 hotels in San Luis Obispo are offering discounted rates as a way to help evacuees.

One of those hotels is the Sands Inn & Suites located on Monterey Street. It's what Henry Fisher, a man who had to evacuate from Ojai due to the Thomas Fire, is currently calling home.

"When you're going to sleep at night not knowing if you're going to be evacuated or if it's going to spread, it just doesn't work," Fisher said.

He's not the only one from down south who made their way north. Matthew Wilkins, the Sands General Manager, says the inn is offering rates at a nearly 50 percent discount, bringing rooms down to around $50 per night.

"At least 30 rooms related directly to the fires," Wilkins said.

Those rooms are occupied by about 70 evacuees.

Nicholas Ali, who was evacuated from his home in Ojai didn't think it would come to this.

"I felt like maybe it was gonna be fine but we have a four-year-old and my wife was really wanting to get out," Ali said.

For Rachel Freya, a fourth generation resident of Ojai, leaving home with her things wasn't an option.

"What really matters to me and what matters most are not my possessions," Freya said.

Anat Dagan, who lives in Matilija Canyon in Ojai, has come to terms with the possibility that her home might not be standing once it's safe to return home.

"Last night I kind of said goodbye when I saw the fires were there," Dagan said.

However, she's choosing to acknowledge the present moment and that she got out of the fire's path safely.

"It really is put(ting) you in the present, so right now I'm going to breakfast with friends and appreciating that I have this buffer time before I have to deal with things," Dagan said.

Wilkins says the discounts at the Sands Inn & Suites are being offered as long as they're needed. However, as the weekend nears, there will be booked rooms for holiday parties and Cal Poly's graduation.
