Santa Barbara Zoo monitoring animals during Thomas Fire

Posted: Updated:

While officials say there is no immediate threat to the Santa Barbara Zoo from the Thomas Fire, the zoo was closed to the public Sunday.

Zoo staff says they are equipped with masks and that animals there are staying inside or have access to inside areas.

"We drill for and are prepared for emergencies," said Zoo Director Nancy McToldrige on Twitter.

The zoo, which is home to more than 500 animals, is currently outside of the evacuation zone.

It was not known when the facility would re-open.
