San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation rangers closed a portion of the Morro View trail in the Irish Hills on December 8, 2017 after a mother mountain lion and her cubs were spotted using an area near the trail as a den.

Rangers chose to close the trail for the safety of both visitors to the area and the lions.  Mother mountain lions are known to be extremely protective and territorial around their cubs.

Physical barriers are being placed where the closure begins and postings are being hung around the Irish Hills trail network.  A game camera is being installed so that Parks and Recreation officials can learn how the mother and her cub(s) are behaving.

The trails will be reopened once officials deem the area safe.
