Fire spares some Carpinteria homes, destroys others

Posted: Updated:

Flames ripped through a neighborhood in Carpinteria Sunday evening, destroying more than 12 structures while sparing others.

Stairs that once lead to a home now lead to rubble after fast moving fires on Sunday burned over the mountains and tore through a Carpinteria neighborhood below.

While some homes were turned to ash, others were left standing among the ghostly scene.

Carpinteria resident Greg Stoney's home was one of those few left. "It looks like it got as close as it could get without burning the home," Stoney said.

"I'm feeling very fortunate, but really sorry for friends who weren't so fortunate," Stoney said.  Homes surrounding his were fully engulfed in flames and destroyed, but his was left untouched.  His 15 chickens also survived.

Stoney was able to put out lingering flames in hopes of getting the house ready for when his family is allowed to return. "It's going to be like living in an ashtray for a bit," he said.

The fire swept through the neighborhood choosing targets at random, and while some structures were a full loss, there are signs of survival.

"This is the camper, and that's my house behind me," Carpinteria resident Jazmin Garcia said motioning towards the property. Garcia came back to find structures destroyed behind the property her family rents. "We came back today and just saw this whole thing burned off.  But our house was fortunate to survive through this fire."

While Some residents are able to breathe a sigh of relief, others will be coming back to sift through the ashes to find what's left of their homes.

Caltrans says that Highway 101 will be closed between Santa Barbara and Ventura indefinitely, making travel difficult for many people. Approximately 95,000 cars pass through this section of the busy freeway on a normal day, so the closure is forcing people to look for other ways to get around. Here some ways to get around the closure by car, train, ferry or plane. It is an important reminder that drivers cannot currently get around the closure by taking Highway 192 or other side...
