Thomas Fire prompts closure of Santa Barbara Zoo for third day

Posted: Updated:

The Santa Barbara Zoo is closed to the public once again as smoke and ash from the nearby Thomas Fire continue affecting the area.

The zoo has been closed since Sunday and says its priority right now is the safety of its staff and animals.

While the zoo is not in the evacuation zone, staff says animals have access to their indoor holdings to help keep them away from the smoke.

"Our keepers are going above and beyond to provide indoor toys, treats, and enrichment for our animals," the zoo posted on Facebook, saying keepers are working hard to provide more indoor toys and treats to the more than 500 animals at the zoo.
