1,500 animals being cared for during Thomas Fire

Posted: Updated:

The County of Santa Barbara says more than 1,500 animals are being cared as the Thomas Fire now covers 27 miles of land.

The Santa Barbara Humane Society is taking care of more than a third of those animals, officials say, with approximately 540 of them being birds.

Large animals are being cared for at the Earl Warren Show Grounds. Staff said earlier this week they had enough volunteers to meet the needs there.

Other animals being cared for by various organizations include dogs, cats, chickens, tortoises, guinea pigs, parrots, three iguanas and a water monitor and chinchilla.
