Santa Barbara Zoo reopens with limited hours

Posted: Updated:

After closing for three days due to the Thomas Fire, the Santa Barbara Zoo reopened Wednesday morning.  The Zoo is offering free admission and indoor activities for free from 10AM to 3PM, and will offer the same hours and activities if conditions allow on Thursday and Friday.

Indoor activities like live animals, story time, a play area with a bounce house, and seasonal crafts will all be offered in the Zoo's Discovery Pavilion classrooms.  There will also be visits from Santa Claus, princesses, and the Zoo's mascot, Duncan the T-rex.  There will also be a few outdoor activities available as well, but the Zoo encourages guests to refer to the Air Quality Index before participating in outdoor activities.

Clean up is underway at the zoo to remove ash and soot in animal enclosures deposited by the Thomas Fire.  Zoo staff wearing special gear are working hard to clean up enclosures, so while some animals may be on display in their enclosures others may not.  Outdoor play areas like The Climb for Condors rock wall and Giraffe Feeding Deck are closed but the Zoo train will run if conditions allow.  Guests are encouraged to wear breathing masks (N95) and check the air quality index before spending time outside.

Winter Zoo Camp will begin next week if conditions allow, as well.  For more information or to sign up, click here.
