UPDATE (5:50 p.m.) - Santa Barbara County Fire officials expect full containment of a fire burning off Highway 1 near Jalama Road by 9 p.m. Thursday.

After GPS mapping, fire officials have revised the size of the fire to 13.6 acres.

Firefighters were working to put out a vegetation fire that sparked Thursday afternoon off Highway 1 outside of Lompoc.

It was reported at about 12:45 p.m. near Jalama Road.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department said the first crews to arrive on scene had a difficult time accessing the remote area and estimated the fire to be 2 to 5 acres in size. By 2:00 p.m., the fire was said to be about 20 acres.

An air and ground attack was launched, which included a helicopter, two air tankers, ground crews, dozers and engines.

Fire officials say additional hand crews were requested to help establish containment lines around the fire, which is reportedly burning in heavy brush.

Firefighters said they felt "confident" they would be able to get a handle on the blaze.
