Memory care patients evacuated from Santa Barbara

Posted: Updated:

Due to the Thomas Fire, memory care patients from Oak Cottages of Santa Barbara were evacuated to a facility in San Luis Obispo Saturday afternoon.

Residents requiring specialized care arrived at The Village at Sydney Creek Memory Care with medications, emergency documents, and even a pet cat in a basket.

Sydney Creek administrator, Kellie Gallegly, worked with Long-Term Care Ombudsman Karen Jones to set up enough cots for the incoming Oak Cottages residents, along with their caregivers and staff.  Close by hotels offered reduced rates for family members, as well.

It's unclear how long the Oak Cottages residents will be staying at at Sydney Creek, but it could be as long as two weeks.  Administrator Kellie Gallegly said, "the whole community has stepped up to help" and thanked SLO Health, the Fire Departments, and many others for their support.
