Cal Poly falls in first all-time meeting versus SMU

Posted: Updated:

Cal Poly men’s basketball senior guard Victor Joseph and junior forward Kuba Niziol each scored a game high 12 points, but SMU sank 15 three-pointers Tuesday evening as the visiting Mustangs fell inside Moody Coliseum, 84-64.

Donovan Fields produced a game high eight assists for Cal Poly (4-8), which knocked down 12 three-pointers itself, but saw SMU (10-3) finish with a 53.6 (15-for-28) percent three-point mark.

In the first meeting between the two programs and first all-time NCAA Division I meeting between two programs with Mustangs as a mascot, senior forward Luke Meikle finished with nine points for Cal Poly while junior forward Josh Martin grabbed a team high seven rebounds.

Cal Poly plays its final non-conference road game of the regular season at first-time opponent UTA on Thursday, Dec. 21. Tip time inside College Park Center is 5 p.m. PT (7 p.m. CT).

During Tuesday’s matchup, eight early points from SMU freshman forward Ethan Chargois – including two three-pointers – handed his side a 12-3 lead after just five-and-a-half minutes.

The Mustangs (Cal Poly), whose first four field goals were three-pointers, twice cut their deficit to five points on deep balls from Martin and Niziol before a dunk by freshman forward Karlis Garoza trimmed the SMU lead to 22-19.

Cal Poly, however, missed its ensuing five field goal attempts and a 13-0 SMU run extended the host’s lead to 35-19 five minutes before the break. Junior guard Trevor John snapped Cal Poly’s drought with one of his side’s six first-half three-pointers, but SMU ultimately took a 40-26 lead into halftime.

A pair of Martin free throws and a Joseph three-pointer twice brought Cal Poly’s deficit down to 12 points to begin the second half, but three more SMU three-pointers inside the opening four minutes upped the host’s lead to 50-33. Joseph followed with a jumper, but the 15-point gap was as close as Cal Poly closed the remainder of the evening.
