Utah Valley pulls away for 89-70 win over visiting Cal Poly

Posted: Updated:

Mustang senior guard Kelly Wong scored a career-high 14 points on Tuesday afternoon, and junior center Devin Stanback added 11, but the Utah Valley women’s basketball team pulled away for an 89-70 win over Cal Poly at the Utah Community Credit Union Center.

The loss brought to a close Cal Poly’s longest road trip in four years — as the Mustangs last played five consecutive games away from San Luis Obispo in 2013-14.

The Wolverines — who avenged a 77-65 loss to Cal Poly at last year’s ShareSLO Holiday Beach Classic — established a 12-2 lead a little more than four minutes in, on the way to a 23-16 lead after the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, Wong sank a jumper followed by a 3 from junior point guard Dye Stahley, cutting the deficit to 26-23 with 6:41 remaining until halftime.

After heading to the break up 42-35, Utah Valley added to its lead, moving ahead 49-37 on a jumper from Taylor Christensen with 6:57 left in the third, but a shot by Mustang freshman Ayzhiana Basallo cut the gap back to single digits — 63-54 — by the end of the quarter.

Utah Valley responded by beginning the fourth with a 3 from Mariah Seals on the quarter’s first possession, however, and used a 7-0 run to go up 76-57 with 5:38 to play.

Twice afterward, the Mustangs (5-6) whittled the lead down to 11 (76-65 at the 4:21 mark and 78-67 with 3:14 remaining), but UVU allowed it to get no closer, as a late 8-0 run pushed the lead back to 86-67 with 59 seconds left.

Wong went 6-for-8 from the floor while surpassing her previous career high as a Mustang (10 points at Northern Arizona on Dec. 9). Her overall collegiate career high of 15 came as a sophomore at City College of San Francisco).

Stanback also had a team-high six rebounds, while senior guard Gabby Grupalo tied her career high with seven assists.

Seals finished with 26 points to lead the Wolverines (5-7), who shot 25-for-46 overall, 10-for-22 from 3-point range and 29-of-34 from the free-throw line.

Cal Poly will return home to host CSU Bakersfield, a future member of the Big West Conference, at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29 (also Mustang Kids Club Night) in Mott Athletics Center.
