PSA: How to properly dispose Christmas trees

Posted: Updated:

If it's time to take out the Christmas tree, don't toss it in the trash.

Authorities say that's simply because the county's garbage service won't pick it up.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office and county officials remind the public there's a list of conditions to meet before it can be hauled off:

  • They have to be cut into 4-foot or shorter lengths, with no tree parts greater than 6 inches in diameter.
  • Absolutely no decorations, tinsel, or flocking (sprayed-on, fake snow) can be left on the tree pieces.
  • Tree parts have to be placed in the green waste cart.

Cold Canyon Landfill, Chicago Grade Landfill and Paso Robles Landfill also accept Christmas trees for recycling, and fees may apply.
