Smoke visible off Gibraltar Road due to Thomas Fire flare-up

Posted: Updated:

A flare-up within the perimeter of the Thomas Fire is making smoke visible once again in portions of southern Santa Barbara County.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department says the flare-up occurred before 8:25 a.m. in a deep draining area off Gibraltar Road.

Due to the location, hand crews will not be able to access the area until later Friday morning.

A helicopter has been requested to make water drops to help hold the fire in check.

Fire officials says residents will likely see a column of smoke and aircraft in the area Friday, but add that there is no threat of the fire spreading beyond the already established containment lines.

As of Friday morning, the fire remained 92 percent contained and had burned 281,893 acres.
