A New Year's Eve party in downtown Santa Barbara turned deadly Monday morning.

Gunshots rang out around 3:30 a.m., leaving one man dead and another man in the hospital.

Neighbors near De La Vina and West Victoria Streets describe the area as relatively quiet and never saw this coming.

"It's usually pretty safe so this is an anomaly," said Alexandra King.

King woke up to crime tape outside her home on De La Vina.

"This is murder. That's pretty horrible," King continued.

Early Monday morning, officers responded to a disturbance on West Victoria Street near De La Vina. On their way, they got word of a shooting.

"With upwards of five shots being fired," said Sgt. Charles Katsapis of the Santa Barbara Police Department.

Two men believed to be in their twenties were found to have been shot. One was pronounced dead at the scene, the other was taken to the hospital.

"A portion of the shooting occurred inside of the residence where the party was held and there was also a part of the shooting that occurred outside the street here at the intersection of De La Vina and Victoria Street," Sgt. Katsapis continued.

Monday morning, portions of the sidewalks in the neighborhood were blocked off with crime tape. Markers were placed next to what appeared to be a trail of blood. Tape also went up outside Country House Inn.

"I just went in and conducted breakfast and asked my guests if they heard anything and they said no," said Kitchen Manager Maureen Null.

Meanwhile, detectives scoured the neighborhood, looking for clues, working to piece together what happened.

The last major crime on De La Vina was an officer-involved shooting several years ago.

Police say the surviving victim in Monday morning's shooting underwent surgery and is expected to live. They also said Monday evening they had not yet made any arrests.
