2018 Polar Bear Dip draws thousands to Cayucos

Posted: Updated:

Thousands kept the New Year's party going Monday in Cayucos for the 38th Annual Carlin Soule Memorial Polar Bear Dip.

Dressed up in their favorite outfits and bathing suits, people took the plunge at noon on New Year's Day.

"They're amazing people," said Jeffrey Reimbold of Santa Maria. "This is so cool. Never done anything like it -- bring in the new year right."

"It's a great way to start out the new year, to get out here, get refreshed, get rid of all that booze you drank the night before," said Roger Stach of Morro Bay. "It's not very cold because you're so numb, once you get in there, you're not cold anymore."

"When the weather is great, it gets better and better every year, but we've even weathered bad weather out here," said Caran Rescinti of Morro Bay. "But no, today is beautiful. It gets better every year."

"It's actually so much warmer than you would think it would be and when you get in you're like, 'Yay, it's New Year's Eve - or New Year's Day, I'm in the water!'" said Genevieve Wiersema of San Francisco.

Prizes were handed out for several contests:

  • The participant who traveled the farthest to take the dip came from Australia
  • The youngest participant was under five years old
  • The oldest participant was 83 years old
  • The Stevens family won "Biggest Family Group" with 17 plunging relatives
  • "Most Original Costume" - Rubber ducky
  • "Most Beautiful Costume" - Minnie Mouse
  • "Funniest Costume" - Beverly Hillbillies
  • "Best Group Costumes" - The Flintstones
