Santa Maria's Armstrong Park set to reopen after fire

Posted: Updated:

A Santa Maria playground that burned in a fire last year is getting a fresh look.

Armstrong Park was closed for repairs after the fire last March caused roughly $200,000 in damage, according to city officials.
Along with a new playground structure, the City of Santa Maria chose to get rid of the bark dirt mixture surface and put in padded turf. The park is set to reopen in two weeks as long as the weather is cooperative.
"We want to make sure that everyone has a place to get outside, enjoy the fresh air and move around and exercise and socialize in a safe setting, so we have about 27 parks and we try to upgrade at least one a year," said Mark van de Kamp, city spokesperson.

Grogan Park received new playground equipment two months ago and Buena Vista park is undergoing a complete overhaul. Atkinson Park also has a new skate park.
