Family jumps to safety from second story window as Paso Robles apartment burns

Posted: Updated:

An early morning apartment fire Thursday in Paso Robles forced a family of four to escape by jumping from their second story window.

The fire broke out at around 2 a.m. on Ebony Drive.

"It was scary because I've never been in a situation like this, especially since it's my family," said Jesus Contreras.

With flames blocking the exit stairway, the Martinez family had no choice but to leap from their second story window.

Dad jumped first.

"So he jumped off and then his wife started to give him the children. He was bringing them down one by one," said Contreras, a Martinez family relative.

Remarkably, Esteban Martinez's wife and two young girls, ages 10 and 11, escaped injury-free. However, Esteban fractured his ankle in the jump.

"Yeah, he's a hero," said Luis Chavez, a family friend.

Chavez came to help clean up the charred mess.

"He (lost) almost everything. His clothes, his couch, everything inside the apartment," Chavez said.

Now the Martinez family is trying to pick up the pieces and salvage what they can.

"But what's important is that they are safe and nothing happened to them," Contreras said.

Friends have set up a GoFundMe page to help the Martinez family.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but fire officials suspect it may have to do with a BBQ pit at the bottom of the staircase.

Fire officials say a total of 13 apartment complex residents were displaced by the fire.
